Welcome to Barbarian Grid! If this is your first time playing, this guide will teach you everything you need to get started.
What is Barbarian Grid?
Barbarian Grid is a hardcore survival RPG where you navigate a dangerous grid-based world filled with deadly enemies, strategic challenges, and rewarding progression.
Core Concept
- Grid Exploration: You spend Action Points (AP) to move across a dangerous grid.
- Turn-Based Interactive Combat: When you step on an enemy, you enter a turn-based battle where you choose to Attack, Defend, or Flee.
- Procedural Encounters: Every dive into the grid is completely randomized.
- Roguelike Mechanics: Death is permanent. When you die, your save is wiped.
The Main Screen
When you start the game, you see:
- Your Character: Displayed in the center with your Class (Berserker or Rogue).
- Health Bar: Shows your current HP.
- Action Points: Remaining AP for movement this day.
- Field Kit: A right-side drawer for materials, consumables, and equipped gear.
- Workshop: A separate crafting drawer with recipes and material requirements.
- Event Log: A separate drawer for recent combat and exploration messages.
- Map: The 15x15 grid, viewed through a centered 7x7 desktop camera around the player.
- Day Tracker & Tax: Shows the current day and the impending Sunday Tax amount.
Combat Basics
How Combat Works
- Move to Tile: You click an adjacent enemy on the map or move with keys (costs AP based on terrain: corridors cost 1 AP, rooms cost 2 AP, traps cost 2 AP).
- Combat Begins: The battle interface overlays the map.
- Turn Selection: Each turn, choose โ๏ธ ATTACK, ๐ก๏ธ DEFEND (reduces damage taken by 40% and buffs next attack damage by 50%), or ๐ FLEE (costs 5 AP, success rate depends on enemy damage).
- Victory or Death: Trade blows until all enemies are defeated or you die. You may inspect the Field Kit during combat, but item and equipment actions remain locked.
Action Points (AP)
Action Points are NOT used for swinging your sword. They represent your physical stamina for the day.
- Moving: 1 AP (default for corridors) or 2 AP (rooms/traps). Rogue moves cost 1 less AP (minimum 1).
- Fleeing Combat: 5 AP (upon success).
Rest Options: End the day at camp to restore AP safely, or end it in the wild to recover 20 AP while risking an ambush, illness, or theft. Both choices advance the calendar and consume 15 Food.
Character Classes Explained
The Berserker
A high-risk, high-reward plate wearer.
- Rage System: Gaining Rage (50% of damage taken) increases damage linearly by 5% per 10 Rage, up to +50% at 100 Rage.
- Thick Skin: Passive 5% damage reduction.
- High HP: Starts with 120 HP.
The Rogue
A fast, evasive leather wearer.
- Nimble: 20% chance to dodge enemy attacks completely.
- Treasure Hunter: Gain 25% more gold from all sources.
- Drawback – Marked by the Collector: Pays 50% more Sunday Tax.
- Light Footed: Movement costs 1 less AP (minimum 1).
- Keen Eye: Better loot chance from chests and enemies, plus a passive +10% Critical Hit chance.
- Lower HP: Starts with 80 HP.
Inventory Management
Equipment Slots
- Weapon: Increases Attack Power (ATK).
- Armor: Increases Defense (DEF).
The Crafting System
Loot drops as raw materials: Scrap (โ๏ธ), Wood (๐ชต), Leather (๐งด), Herb (๐ฟ), and Meat (๐). Open the separate Workshop drawer to craft gear and supplies:
- `8x Scrap` = Iron Sword (+12 damage)
- `12x Scrap + 3x Leather` = Leather Armor (reduces damage taken by 20%)
- `5x Wood + 3x Scrap` = Wooden Shield (+5 flat defense blocks)
Consumable Items
- Bandages: Restores 15 HP.
- Potions: Restores 30 HP.
- Field Rations: Costs 1 Meat and restores 30 Food.
Map Navigation & The Tracker
Click adjacent tiles to move. The map is grid-based. Unrevealed tiles are black.
The Sunday Tax
The most important mechanic in Barbarian Grid.
- Every time you end the day at camp or in the wild, time advances.
- On Day 7 (Sunday), the Tax Collector arrives.
- You must pay the tax, starting at 120 Gold.
- Crucial Warning: The tax increases by 60% every week. If you cannot pay, you are executed instantly.
Common Beginner Mistakes
- Mistake 1: Spending Every AP Without an Exit - Keep enough AP to retreat or flee when exploring dangerous tiles.
- Mistake 2: Not Preparing for Combat - Heal and equip gear before stepping onto a dangerous enemy. Item actions are blocked once combat starts.
- Mistake 3: Ignoring Food - Each ended day consumes 15 Food. Carry Meat or craft Field Rations before supplies run low.
- Mistake 4: Hoarding Gold - Gold matters for Sunday, but survival upgrades can be worth spending on before then.
Your First Run Goals
- [ ] Follow the single gold-outlined tile and complete the guided first fight.
- [ ] Find Meat, craft a Field Ration, and understand daily Food cost.
- [ ] Explore freely, then choose whether to return to camp or rest in the wild.
- [ ] Use your class passives and prepare enough gold for Sunday.
