The Truth About Combat
Combat in Barbarian Grid is a turn-based, interactive battle. When you step onto an enemy tile, you enter a separate combat screen where you must choose your action each turn:
- ⚔️ ATTACK: Swing your equipped weapon (or bare fists) to damage the primary enemy.
- 🛡️ DEFEND: Take a defensive stance, reducing incoming damage by 40% this turn and increasing the damage of your next attack by 50%.
- 🏃 FLEE: Attempt to run back to your previous tile. This has a success rate based on the enemy's damage and costs 5 Action Points (AP) if successful. If you fail, you stay in combat and the enemy counter-attacks.
The Combat Formula
Every attack is calculated through a variance roll mitigated by defense.
Attack Power (ATK)
Your weapon has a damage value (e.g. Iron Sword deals +12 damage). Your base unarmed damage is 5. Attacks have a ±20% damage variance. Additionally, there is a base 10% critical hit chance (dealing double damage).
Defense (DEF)
Defense reduces incoming damage. Barbarian Grid uses a hybrid defense system:
- Defense Block (Flat): Reduces incoming damage by a fixed number (e.g. Wooden Shield blocks 5 damage).
- Defense Mitigation (Percent): Reduces incoming damage by a percentage (e.g. Leather Armor reduces damage taken by 20%).
If flat and percent mitigations exceed the incoming damage, you take a minimum of 1 damage.
Class Dynamics
Classes drastically alter how you approach combat encounters, especially against high DEF targets like Elite Orcs or Bosses.
The Berserker's Rage
Berserkers rely on heavy armor, thick health pools, and Rage.
- You gain Rage equal to 50% of any damage taken.
- Your passive Berserker Fury increases damage output by +5% per 10 Rage (up to +50% at 100 Rage).
- Thick Skin passively reduces all damage taken by 5%.
Strategy: Accumulate Rage from smaller hits to increase your damage output before engaging Bosses and Elites.
The Rogue's Agility
Rogues rely on evasion, agility, and critical strikes rather than heavy armor.
- Nimble: Gives a passive 20% chance to dodge enemy attacks completely.
- Treasure Hunter: Gain 25% more gold from all sources.
- Light Footed: Movement costs 1 less AP (minimum 1), giving you more opportunities to explore and gather resources before resting.
- Keen Eye: Better loot chance from chests and enemies, plus a passive +10% Critical Hit chance (20% base critical chance vs 10% for Berserker).
Item Usage & Fleeing
Field Kit Access During Combat
You can open the Field Kit to inspect inventory and equipment during combat, but item actions are locked: you cannot use consumables, equip or unequip gear, or craft until combat ends. Plan ahead and heal before entering dangerous tiles.
Fleeing
If a battle goes south, you can click Flee.
- Fleeing attempts to step you back to your previous tile.
- Success rate is base 70%, reduced by the enemy's damage (harder to escape strong enemies).
- Fleeing costs 5 Action Points (AP). If you have less than 5 AP, or if you fail the escape roll, you will remain in combat and take full enemy damage.
Advanced Combat Strategy
1. The Pre-Heal Rule
Do not walk into an Elite Goblin tile with 30 HP. Use a potion or bandage before moving. If you walk into a strong enemy, you cannot use items from your inventory once the battle starts.
2. Take a Stance (Defend)
If an enemy is about to hit hard, click Defend. Taking 40% less damage and doubling down on a 50% damage boost for your next turn's attack is a key tactic for defeating tough bosses.
3. Fleeing as a Last Resort
Fleeing costs 5 AP, which is a massive portion of your daily budget, but it is always better than permanent death. Ensure you keep a buffer of at least 5 AP when stepping into unexplored areas.
