Barbarian Grid is moving through release-candidate testing with a clearer first-day experience, a redesigned desktop interface, and a more coherent survival loop.
What is Barbarian Grid?
Barbarian Grid is a desktop-first survival RPG built around deliberate exploration, interactive turn-based combat, crafting, and the pressure of a weekly tax.
Core Features
- Strategic Combat System: Choose Attack, Defend, or Flee while class passives and equipment shape each fight
- Procedural Generation: Maps, encounters, and loot vary from run to run
- Progressive Difficulty: Common enemies, elites, bosses, hazards, and the Sunday Tax create escalating pressure
- Grid Exploration System: Traversal costs Action Points, so route planning matters
- Crafting and Equipment: Turn materials into weapons, armor, medicine, antidotes, and food
- Survival Economy: Manage Health, AP, Food, Gold, and Infection across each week
Design Philosophy
- Teach Through Play: The guided first day highlights essential actions, then gets out of the way
- Challenge Over Comfort: Risk should create meaningful decisions rather than surprise punishment
- Depth Over Breadth: Each encounter and item should have a clear role
- Fair But Hard: Failures should follow rules the player can understand and plan around
What Makes It Different?
Distinct Combat Pressures
Enemy health, damage, defense, and encounter tier create different risk profiles. Defend timing, equipment, class passives, and the decision to flee all matter.
Meaningful Preparation
The Workshop turns materials into equipment and supplies. Preparation before combat matters because item actions are locked during a fight, even though the Field Kit remains available for inspection.
Run-to-Run Variety
Procedural maps, encounters, loot, and route choices make each run different while keeping the underlying rules learnable.
Development Status
Barbarian Grid is being developed iteratively through code review, automated regression tests, randomized map-generation tests, and hands-on browser playtesting. Recent feedback directly shaped the guided first day, class passives, survival resources, combat settlement, and desktop HUD.
What's Next?
- Release Readiness: Continue regression testing and browser playtests
- Balance: Tune the first week using real playtest evidence
- Quality of Life: Improve clarity and reduce friction in repeated desktop play
- Content: Add encounters only when they create a distinct decision
- No Microtransactions: The current game is free, single-player, and stores run data locally in your browser
